The next morning I started up the Mist Trail with the intention of “power hiking” to Vernal Falls and on to Nevada Falls and then back down via the John Muir Trail, making for a nice loop. Morning air was chilly, in the upper 40s F temps. For me, that’s ideal weather when hiking up a steep trail as the sun is warming things up and there’s no wind.
I caught up to a bunch of people at Vernal Falls, some planning to go to the top of Half Dome, as it was the last day before the cables would come down.

I enjoyed the heavy breathing and the lung-and-quad-muscle-burning stairs, taking me back to my days of high school wrestling. A man was off to the side, looking rather haggard:
“You doing okay?”
“I don’t do this shit, ever. I’ll be fine.”

I continued on, stopping up top to snap a few photos before heading towards Nevada Falls.
