An article I wrote in 2 parts about my trip to Loreto for 3 nights/4 days of sea kayaking and camping is now out on River Sports Magazine. Land and marine protected areas are crucial to preventing biodiversity loss, as well as providing humans opportunities to better understand ourselves and how we are a part of nature.
“Everything I could see around me was part of a massive, protected area, from the top of the Sierra down to the water below my boat, to the offshore islands and the waters around them. Three distinct national parks all merged into one area, covering more than 500,000 acres of land and water around Loreto, Baja Sur, Mexico, protected from large-scale development. The dolphins did not know that, but perhaps they could feel it.”

“World-renowned French oceanographer and documentarian Jacques Cousteau famously called Mexico’s Sea of Cortez “The Aquarium of the World.” Nearly a thousand fish species live below the water’s surface I paddled across. We had seen dolphins, and many years ago, I snorkeled with sea lions at Isla Carmen off Loreto’s coast. Sitting on Honda Beach on Danzante Island after a lunch of guacamole tostadas and thinking about all that, I decided to go snorkeling.”
