Ocean Beach Sunrise Clouds and the Mystical Dawn Patrollers

I’m an early riser, usually up and out of bed by 6:00 AM at the very latest, with 4:30-5:00 not at all abnormal for me.   I enjoy the quiet morning.  The first cup of coffee never disappoints, especially when it’s accompanied by a book.

Yesterday was a little different.  After a stop at the airport, I went up and over and then down the hill to Ocean Beach.  A few surfers were out on dawn patrol.  I find that admirable, and downright mystical — to be in the ocean as the sun rises, waiting to ride a wave on a board that you balance on for maybe ten seconds if you’re lucky, and to do so for reasons only known to you and a few other people who can relate … I hope there will always be surfers, whether on a board or simply using their body.
