Bodysurfing with Dolphins in Ocean Beach, San Diego

Yesterday, I went bodysurfing in Ocean Beach, San Diego. At different times during my 75 minutes in the ocean, dolphins swam by, sometimes surfing the waves. Three of them rode a nice 3-4 footer directly at me!

While I was treading water and waiting for the next wave, magic occurred. If I counted accurately, nine dolphins played around me. I watched them exhale, a sound I hope to not soon forget. We (they and me) were close enough that we could see each other’s eyes. One specific moment, a dolphin rose from the depths not more than five feet or so from me.

Soulifying.

For what was likely two minutes, maybe longer, I felt the wonder of the wild ocean.
