My bride’s eyes were stung with tear gas as she ran from bullets raining down from the surrounding buildings. She was alive in solidarity, throwing off the chains of tyranny.
We visited the small memorial to the martyrs. Standing there, I was not able to imagine in any way what she was thinking as she walked around the grounds where she raised the Paraguayan flag on the back of a pick up truck. Students, farmers, low wage workers, trash pickers sought justice.

This past weekend, Paraguay elections resulted in an elitist, privileged, multi-millionaire winning the Presidency. He’s made homophobic statements over the years, and only first voted (ever in his lifetime) in 2009.
