If you’re ever driving along US 395, stop in and check out the small museum in Independence that provides a wonderful history lesson on the area. It’s free; donations are welcomed. Inside, there’s an exhibit to Mary Austin, author of one of my favorite books: The Land of Little Rain. She wrote the book while living in town.
Out back you can walk around the open air time capsule to pioneering days of the old west, complete with views of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains:
