The late afternoon sun shined down on the Mariachis standing around the arch at the north end of Tijuana’s Avenida Revolucion. A breeze or two made for pleasant conversations with the men, young and old. We heard stories of family generations passing on the musical art, the uniqueness of the silver adornments on their suits, and the joy it brings them to sing.
It’s easy to look around and see the romance of it all. No doubt, they are in it for the money too. They were optimistic for the weekend’s earnings, as Mother’s Day was around the corner.
After the sun was well past set, their down time would slowly roll into a night of revelry, hopefully. Guitars and horns and singing voices would lift into the night air.
The bottle-cap checkers games would recommence tomorrow.
