For the month of February, a local artist in Oaxaca displayed earthen migrants that seemed to rise up from the ground. They stood stoicly, sprawling away from the church into the side streets. Men, women and children were migrating around the clock, day and night.
We were told by a person on the street that the artist’s intention was to recognize the growing number of Oaxaquenos that are walking north to the border, and to raise the awareness of the tourists passing through the charming town. Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s poorest states. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, neighbors are heading north in search of the American Dream.
