Senegal

Two weeks in one of Africa’s most peaceful countries (there’s never been a coup…but the 2012 elections did see violence) is not much time to understand life there.  A week in Velingara in the Casamance region of southern Senegal and a week in Dakar, with a side trip to see sub-Saharan Africa’s largest mosque in Touba, provided a little insight, enough to know things like:  the food is great, I need to learn French, though Wolof and Pular would be better, and the people truly are very welcoming and kind (except for a few taxi drivers!).  I hope to go back, and if/when I do, I will make sure that I experience Dakar’s live music scene.
